After closing the doors of their much-loved café, El Estanco has unveiled a new, soon to open venture.

Owners and chefs, Abby Osborne and Julian Velasquez, have spent the past nine months renovating an 1890s property opposite their old establishment in Greenock.

The new venue promises an elevated version of their former café.

El Estanco quickly became a favourite among both locals and visitors after opening in 2016.

El Estance specialises in wholesome and seasonal food with a South American flair.

Abby and Julian have a strong focus on ethically sourced, environmentally sustainable dishes and practices.

“The new space has definitely given us more room to play,” says Abby.

Abby and Julian said they realised not long after opening their existing Murray Street premises there was scope for El Estanco to grow.

“The new site will offer the same intimate settings and unique style that our customers know and love, but we’re also able to include an artisan bakery, coffee roaster, market garden, kids’ nature play area, wood-fired pizza oven and an area for larger events and gatherings,” says Abby.

“We wanted to create a space that is family-friendly and homely, staying true to our original El Estanco ethos.”

The new, expanded menu will combine El Estanco’s old favourites (aka the Chilaquiles) as well as plenty of new dishes. Much of the menu comes from Julian’s Colombian heritage. Julian grew up in Bogotá, Colombia, where his love of South American cuisine was established. The new venue will have a bit more structure from El Estanco’s previous days of just having a special board.

Breakfast will be served from 8am until 11:30am, and lunch from noon until 3pm. If you do miss these specific windows, Abby assures us nibbles and coffee will be available all day. There are plans to open for dinner Friday nights and selected Saturday nights.

With the new venue also comes a private function and events hall. The Pavilion sits out the back of the establishment and can house around 40 guests for an intimate dining experience.

Abby and Julian will not be hosting an official opening. Instead, the couple will be putting out a sign that simply reads, ‘open for business.’ The new El Estanco can be found at 18-22 Murray Street, Greenock.
