1. How many do I use?
When it comes to deciding how many hashtags to use, there isn’t a magic number! One study found that posts with 11+ hashtags received the best engagement. Instagram allows users to post up to 30 hashtags, so we recommend posting as many RELEVANT hashtags to both your post and brand!
Unlike Instagram, there is no limit on the number of hashtags that you are able to use on Twitter, however, Twitter does not recommend using more than 2 hashtags in a Tweet.
2. Where do I put them?
When it comes to posting hashtags, you have two options:
- add them to the caption OR
- post them in the first comment.
Essentially there is no functional difference in posting them in either location, so it’s completely up to you! Personally, we prefer posting them as the first comment to avoid cluttering the caption; however, if your followers are quick to comment, and you’d still prefer to hide your hashtags away from your caption – simply:
- After your caption, tap Return or Enter.
- Enter a symbol, punctuation mark, or emoji, then hit Return again.
- Repeat a few times, then add your hashtags!
Instagram hides captions after three lines. Considering this, with the above technique, even if your viewers click to read more – the hashtags will still remain visually separate.
3. Which ones do I use and where do I find them?
Ultimately, the key is to include a mix of trending and niche hashtags that are RELEVANT to your brand (and your post). And there are a couple of ways to find these (metaphorical) gems!
One of the easiest ways to find relevant hashtags is by searching a keyword or phrase on Instagram (ensuring you filter your search results by clicking on the ‘Tags’ tab at the top if on the mobile app, or using a ‘#’ at the start of your searched keyword when accessing via a computer).
Tools like Hashtagify.me also make it easy to find trending hashtags for your brand/post, however, a paid subscription is usually required.

These above hashtags have a staggering amount of followers and posts, so naturally it makes sense to tag along, right? Well sure, definitely if it’s relevant, but with the volume of posts on such high-traffic hashtags, it’s likely your brand will get lost in the noise.
While it’s certainly easier to stay in the top (Recent) section for a niche hashtag, your exposure to a wider audience is limited.
Solely relying on either trending or niche hashtags is unlikely to attract a community of followers. To ensure you’re targeting a genuine audience who are ready to engage with your brand, we recommend selecting a core mix of popular AND niche hashtags RELEVANT to your content.
