Third generation of Mitchells takes over in the Clare Valley

With two generations of committed wine enthusiasts guiding Mitchell Wines for almost 45 years, the third generation of Mitchells has now taken the helm, and as they do so, they also introduce a modern collection of wines – Kinsfolk by Mitchell Wines.

The release of the Kinsfolk range is symbolic for the Mitchells, representing the changing of the guard, and representing the family, both past and present.

While Andrew and Jane will continue working within the business, they take on ambassadorial roles, as they make room for Angus, Edwina and Hilary to make their mark.

Included in the Kinsfolk range is an off-dry 2017 Riesling, 2017 Gruner Veltliner, 2017 Grenache, and 2015 Shiraz. These wines are small batch, individual wines that express unique, single vineyard characteristics from where they are grown.

As the new general manager, Angus said, “The new Kinsfolk range is produced with the same sustainable practices implemented throughout all our winemaking. They are generous in flavour and harmoniously balanced; a range we sincerely hope our consumers will enjoy for years to come.”

Following in his father’s footsteps, Angus Mitchell’s focus is to continue the sustainable farming approach that has been passed down from previous generations. He has vast vineyard and winery experience – working in the Hunter Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and the Alsace region of France.

“Kinsfolk has been a natural next step for us,” Angus said.

“Having the three ranges is important for us to showcase what both Mitchell Wines and Clare Valley are capable of producing. The Mitchell range is more traditional in style, the McNicol’s collection is an aged release, and Kinsfolk is more modern and adventurous.

“We now feel that our portfolio is complete and demonstrates how wonderfully versatile wines from Clare Valley can be.”

The family farm, purchased in 1949, was originally a dairy and orchard, and included a small hobby vineyard that was managed by Peter McNicol Mitchell. In 1975 Peter’s son, Andrew, took over management, and officially established Mitchell Wines. Together with Jane, the business has grown to include 80 hectares under vine, a winery and a bottling facility.

Hilary Mitchell is currently back at university, studying to take on the role of Winemaker at Mitchell Wines. She previously studied visual arts and had a successful career in the Spanish fashion industry. Her love of language and travel saw her gain experience in wineries across France and Spain, but her family ties eventually enticed her back to the Clare Valley.

Edwina Mitchell has travelled extensively throughout Europe, the United Kingdom and Canada; exploring, working and gaining in-depth experience in both the wine and marketing industries. After years of travelling, it was her love for the countryside that brought her back to the Clare Valley. She brings her diverse experience to Mitchell Wines as the marketing and cellar door manager.
